The St. John's Centre of the
Royal Astronomical Society of Canada
is celebrating International Astronomy Day (Sat. May 8th),
in conjunction with
the Johnson Geo Centre,
Signal Hill, St. John’s.
From Noon to 4:00 PM there will be a display of telescopes in the
Geocentre lobby.
Talk to an astronomer about observing or about your new equipment,
pick up
information about dark skies, learn how to make a star finder,
or see the
Sun (if it's out), using special solar telescopes. Weather permitting, there
will also be telescopes set up to view the Moon and Deep Sky Objects
from
9:00 PM to 11:00 PM (weather permitting).
In addition, two talks will be presented by RASC members.
2PM - Jim Stacey - Astrophotography Reveals Stormy Corona
and Fiery Prominences of the Total Solar Eclipse
3PM - Nikolay Damyanov - discusses the challenging decision making,
that a large
group of the RASC St. John's Centre were faced with,
regarding where
in Newfoundland to travel to observe
this extremely rare event,
as well as the actual
experience in its full glory.
There There will also be a Planetarium Show in the Celestial Room,
and a telescope workshop, for those wanting
to learn how to set up their own telecope.
