  • Presentations: Chris Stevenson - Spectroscopy - a Bookend Astronomical Overview

In February 1965 the author's father, Carl M. Stevenson, gave one of the first talks to the young St. John's Centre of the RASC, on Spectroscopy. While less than a year old at the time, his son would go on to study spectroscopy himself and also become an RASC member, creating an opportunity for a "repeat/update" in the Centre's 60th year. Most astronomy is done at arm's length because we can only "look but rarely touch", making the analyzing of the light from celestial objects a principal tool for studying them. This short talk quickly reviews a couple of the basic principles involved, and how they've led to our current understanding of the Universe and everything in it - including several things, such as exoplanets and dark matter, discovered since 1965.
