- Talk: Mike Morrow - "Two remarkable people- Ruth Northcott and Dora Russell"
In 1971, Dora Russell, President of the St. John's Centre of the RASC, accepted, on behalf of the centre, the donation of a telescope that had belonged to the late Ruth Northcott, who had been editor of the Journal of the RASC and of the Observer's Handbook from 1957 until her death in 1969. She was also National RASC president from 1962 to 1964. Ruth Northcott was a professional astronomer who had a tremendous impact on the RASC through her service, her writing, and her editorial work. Dora Russell was a professional writer whose enthusiasm for astronomy was expressed through her writing and through her efforts to help found an RASC centre in this province. Although they don't seem to have ever met, and had only a limited correspondence, the impacts of these two remarkable individuals are still felt in the St. John's centre today. This talk will outline and remember some of their accomplishments and contributions.
