The May meeting will take place on:
Wednesday May 16, 2018 8:00 pm
Chemistry - Physics Building
Memorial University of Newfoundland
- Speaker: Dr. Michael Morrow: "The Rocket Scientist"
In 1972, Herbert Gush, a UBC physics professor set out to make the first measurement of the Cosmic Microwave Background using a liquid-helium-cooled spectrometer mounted in a Black Brant rocket. At the same time, NASA was making plans to do the same thing using the Cosmic Background Explorer (CoBE). In 1989, both succeed. This talk describes the lopsided race to make this Nobel Prize-winning measurement and how close Professor Gush came to winning it.
