M51 photographed from St. John's on May 2008 by Tim Crauk, imaged through Garry Dymond's Celestron C8 scope. It was accurately tracked using an Lx200 mount. 60 images were taken with a Meade DSI camera, each with an exposure of 30 seconds. Processing was with Registax and PhotoShop.
M51 is in the constellation Canes Venatici, close to the Big Dippers handle. At 8th magnitude the galaxy is invisible to the unaided eye. It has two central cores, perhaps the outcome of a collision with another Galaxy..
